Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) 

Syrian rue is native to the mediterranean regions, and extends into Europe, Asia and Siberia. It has thousands of years of traditional use in the rites of many cultures. The plant has remained a popular tool in both folk medicine and spiritual practices for so long that some historians believe the plant may be the ancient "soma".

Physiologically, Syrian rue seeds are widely known for their antidepressant effects, and their stimulati. The primary constituents that contribute to this are the b-carboline alkaloids called harmine and harmaline which cause MAO inhibition. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are chemicals that inhibit the activity of monoamine oxidase enzymes: enzymes that break down monoamine neurotransmitters. Because MAOIs prevent this breakdown process, monoamine neurotransmitters remain available longer in the synapses.  MAO-inhibitors are used in Western medicine as antidepressants. Syrian rue has also been show to have antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity and has been successfully used to treat drug resistant bacteria. The seeds are also antimutagenic, antioxidant, aphrodisiac and analgesic. 

Psychospiritually, Syrian rue enhances our ability to lucid dream, and recall our dreams. It helps to expand consciousness, dissolve perceptions of linear time and with past life regression work. Syrian rue helps us to look at life with a different perspective, connecting the dots of our experiences of the past, present and future. 

Contraindications and cautions
-Due to Syrian rue’s MAOI actions, it is contraindicated with SSRI’s and other serotonin increasing medications, supplements and herbs, as it may precipitate serotonin syndrome. 
-Pregnancy - vasicine and vasicinone are uterine stimulating properties, and Harman is thought to interact directly with DNA and may be mutagenic.
-Hypertension
-Individuals experiencing mania or psychosis.
-Individuals experiencing emotional or psychological upheaval that are not ready to explore the source of their problems. 

Pharmacology
The active alkaloids of Peganum harmala seeds contain the MAOI compounds harmane, harmine, harmaline, harmalol and tetrahydroharmine (collectively known as harmala alkaloids). Research conducted by Hemmateenejad et al. suggests that the dried Peganum harmala seed contains 5.9% harmala alkaloids - 0.16% harmane, 1.404.3% harmine, 0.79-5.6% harmaline, 0.6-3.9% harmalol, and 0.1% tetrahydroharmine (Moloudizargari et al, 2013).

 

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Monoatomic gold
